I was a tutor for 25 years for high school students, and I am in awe of parents who homeschool. Thank you for creating resources that support them. I really struggled in the traditional school system, but I'm not sure if homeschooling was even a thing back in the '70s. And my parents certainly wouldn't have taken the time to do it... But I wonder sometimes if I might have had an easier time of it if I could have just learned at home.
There would have been a few people doing homeschooling back then without the support of correspondence school. I read Growing Without Schooling, a magazine from the USA in the mid-1980s when first homeschooling and there were families writing about homeschooling who had teenagers.
Yes, my guess is it was a bit more on The Fringe than. Which is ironic because I grew up in Santa Cruz, California, which was the epicenter of The Fringe. But my parents were both working 60 hours a week, so it was school and daycare for us...
It’s incredible how much our kids can teach us, often in moments of defiance or resistance. Your son’s purple protest was more than just a rebellious act; it was a statement of agency. And the way you responded with introspection shows a deep respect for his autonomy. Recognizing that our children's time and engagement deserve meaning is an important lesson. Sometimes the most valuable growth (for us or kids) comes when plans fall apart 😊
This particular child now runs his own successful business. He’s ability to turn his hand to making and creating anything continues to amaze me. He refuses to accept mediocrity in all areas of his life. Autonomy is a hall-mark of his being.

I think I might have one like that, too! I hope I will manage to foster resilience as much as the creativity!
